Are you kissable?

Hum? Yes, you read right!

The mouth is the gateway into the digestive tract. Keeping your teeth and gums healthy is important for proper chewing and overall good health. If your bite is off or have dental work that is broken, you will have problems keeping your teeth clean. Retained food on the teeth and gums feeds the bacteria good or bad that lives in the mouth. Excessive plaque will not only irritate your gums, but will erode the enamel right off your teeth. Also, the microorganism that eat the enamel will also eat and destroy the bone that surrounds the teeth (periodontal disease) making the teeth mobile. This mobility leads to further trauma to the teeth and bone. Teeth are supposed to be stationary and not moving around like shift gear in a car!

Other causes of gum disease are diabetes, hormonal imbalances

,medications, and some genetic disorders.  Periodontal disease can lead to heart disease.  In fact, cardiologist are sending patients to the dentist to get clearance that the patient is free of gum disease prior to surgery.  In this case periodontal disease equals to inflammation.

When you are diagnosed with periodontal disease it means that your gums, the connective tissue has separated from the root of the tooth and nourishment has been severed. To restore the health of the teeth and gums your dentist or hygienist will suggest a root planning and scaling treatment. This treatment is the first line of defense in reversing disease and is the least invasive. It involves scaling and root plaining the crown and the root of the teeth to remove the debris & calculus that is preventing the attachment of the roots to the rest of the body. Your dentist may prescribe antibiotics too. The normal attachment of the roots to gums varies in depth from 1 to 3 mm (normal sulcus), but in periodontal disease these called pockets varying 5-12 mm in depth making homecare very difficult.

This is why is important if possible to brush your teeth 2-3x per day and to floss once per day. Visiting your dentist at least twice per year for a prophylactic treatment of gums and teeth. This visit will include an oral cancer screening too.

As a health coach and someone that was a dental hygienist for 28 years I can tell you that in order for dental treatment to be successful you will have to implement:

• Eating healthier- More plant based, ¾ plate, but still include healthy animal protein as it is needed to rebuild the bone and connective tissue.

• Supplement with vitamin C and Zinc taken simultaneously for better absorption. In other words, it is necessary for connective tissue and wound healing process.

• If you are given antibiotics, a natural alternative is Wild oregano oil (Mediterranean source),7-14 days,3x per day, but always check with your dentist or physician first. Gum disease is a long process to reverse so be patient with yourself and those taking care of your dental condition. Health is a journey and not a destination! The reason I am suggesting an herbal antibiotic is that many times the antibiotics are prescribed for a period of 3 months or longer. Antibiotics are wonderful in an emergency, but given for long times it will destroyed the gut flora leaving you with all sort of problems that affect digestion. Herbal remedies also need to be taken with caution and your constitution needs to be taken in consideration when using them.

• Flossing deep periodontal pockets is best done with super floss. Super floss has a section that has a sponge that can be saturated in antibacterial solutions. A good one is organic olive leaf extract oil. You can find this oil in the refrigerated section of the health food stores.

• Work with a health coach if you need further help in achieving your health goals. Now with your healthy teeth & gums smile. You are kissable!
